After the news of ROH going on a hiatus, leaving the pro wrestling world, Major League Wrestling CEO Court Bauer had talks to say he needs to use this as a blockbuster moment for the company. So for "The League" he decides to purchase the ROH library and also enter discussions to buy the entire company.
At the end of the year, ROH has their "Final Battle" PPV that sees Bandido retain the ROH World Title against Jay Lethal and The Briscoes win their record-12th set of ROH World Tag Team Titles against Dragon Lee and Kenny King. But most notably, the future of ROH is noted. At the end, Cesar Duran comes into Baltimore and announces he has bought ROH to the "Major Leagues." Duran says the new MLW season begins in April with a SuperCard of Dishonor on Pay-Per-View!
After the new year, MLW hosts a "Season Finale" and Alexander Hammerstone defeats Jacob Fatu in a 30-minute Iron Man Match that goes into Sudden Death and Hammerstone wins 2-1. After the match, ROH's final world champion Bandido comes in with his title setting up the match that will open the new MLW season: Alexander Hammerstone versus Bandido for the MLW Championship.
In other news around the wrestling world, some notable names were let go right before the new year, which caught WWE some heat with the media for cutting names in the holiday season:
Akira Tozawa, Dolph Ziggler, Drake Maverick, Drew Gulak, Kyle O'Reilly, Nash Carter, Ricochet, Robert Roode, Samoa Joe, Wes Lee.
It's also been confirmed Pete Dunne let his contract expire at the end of the year and is considering a return to WWE, along with wrestling elsewhere like AEW or overseas. In addition, Kevin Owens let his contract expire in January and immediately joined AEW in February at AEW Revolution and is currently feuding with The Elite.
Speaking of AEW, Brian Cage confirms he's no longer with the company. He's expected to join WWE.
With ROH talent free to sign anywhere they want, the following happened:
